FENDER TELECASTER PAISLEY RED 1968

Superbe Fender Telecaster Paisley Red de 1968, en très bon état.

Un rare modèle qui prend sa source à l’embranchement du « Flower Power » et du rock’n’roll – d’une part, la probable intention des têtes pensantes de CBS, nouveaux propriétaires de Fender, de surfer sur la vague hippie qui bat son plein vers la fin des années 60 en créant une guitare arborant les motifs liés intrinsèquement au mouvement. D’autre part, le fait que ce modèle est adopté en 1969 par un certain James Burton, qui se trouvera être nul autre que le guitariste qui accompagnera le King Elvis Presley sur scène jusqu’au décès de ce dernier.
Pourtant, d’un point de vu commercial, et ce malgré les conditions réunies lors de son lancement, la Telecaster Paisley sera bien loin d’atteindre un quelconque succès. En effet, Fender se gardera même de la faire apparaître à son catalogue pour les années 1968 et 1969, et discontinuera discrètement le modèle en ’69. On estime ainsi que seulement environ 1500 de ces instruments ont été produits. On peut donc dire que la renommée du modèle est entièrement due à James Burton, qui reçut un exemplaire en cadeau de la part de Chuck Weiner, l’un des vice-présidents de Fender, qu’il jouera à partir de 1969 aux côtés d’Elvis et pendant de nombreuses années par la suite.
Le présent modèle est en superbe état, avec une belle patine révélant l’astuce employée par ses concepteurs afin de réaliser la finition : une simple couche de papier peint présentant les motifs Paisley, avec les bords peints en rouge puis le tout scellé par une couche de vernis transparent. Première variation du modèle avec touche en érable rapportée. Réglé et préparé par nos soins, en parfait état de jeu.

Stunning 1968 Fender Paisley Red Telecaster, in very good condition.

A rare model which stems from the conjunction of the « Flower Power » movement and of rock’n’roll – on one hand, the head honchos of the newly formed CBS/Fender aiming to capitalize on the hippie craze of the late 60s by putting out an instrument sporting the Paisley motif, iconically linked to the movement. On the other hand, the fact that this model will end up in the hands of non other than James Burton, who would go on to play guitar alongside the King Elvis Presley up until his untimely demise.
Despite all the stars being aligned for this model to succeed, it surprisingly went almost unnoticed for the two years where it was produced, from ’68 to ’69, and Fender didn’t even bother adding it to its product catalog before silently discontinuing it. All in all, only around 1500 instruments are thought to have left the assembly line. Thus, if not for Chuck Weiner, one of the directors at Fender/CBS, and his visionary idea to gift one of the Paisley Teles to James Burton, it may have ended up among Fender’s forgotten guitars.
The present example is in great condition, with a great aging of the finish that shows of the tricks employed by Fender builders to create the finish: a thin layer of Paisley wall paper with the sides of the guitar painted red, and everything sealed in a layer of transparent lacquer. This model is an early variant and has the « maple board » neck instead of a one piece maple neck. Complete professional setup done at our workshop, in perfect playing condition.
